Golf loses mentor to young
Geelong Advertiser, March 18th by Alison Aprhys
CAMPBELL Muller, a golf mentor who helped develop leading players including Ben Eccles and rising star Jack Murdoch, has died at 72 after a heart attack at the Sands Golf Club on Monday.
A long-time Geelong District Golf Association member, Muller’s passion for sharing the game with young players led to him his role as golf program manager with the Barwon Sports Academy.
Murdoch said he was a real mentor who was as interested in the player as he was in their sporting performance.
“After a match he’d always ask you how you were going, not just about your game,” he said.
“He looked after the complete person. It’s very sad.”
BSA chief executive Cameron Loftus said Muller’s passing was a great loss.
“Campbell was an enormously giving person and his passion and commitment to forming, running and continuing to challenge the boundaries of our golf program was a great credit to the man,” Loftus said.
“He drove the formation of the partnership between Golf Victoria, Geelong District Golf Association and the Barwon Sports Academy.”
Sands golf operations manager Peter Nolan said Muller died in the pro shop while volunteering for the club’s Golf Week.
“We already have the Cam Muller Trophy, which is awarded for our most valuable pennant player, and I feel Golf Week will always be associated with Cam,” he said.
The Geelong District Golfing Association’s Phil Smith said Muller was meticulous in his approach. “His had several roles here but his dedication to young golfers was phenomenal,” Smith said.
